Folklore holds that persons who drowned, committed suicide, or died in an accident while harboring intense animosity are said to be “water ghosts,” sometimes referred to as “water monkeys.” As water ghosts, they will roam the area where they perished. They wait calmly in the water, luring or forcing victims to drown so they may serve as their own scapegoat. The water ghosts used this technique for thousands of years to achieve rebirth and escape hell. Grandpa Tai was born in an area named “Tianshui Village” in the Republican era, which was surrounded by mountains. The residents there, commanded by the village chief Qian Xing, were not wealthy but managed to live peacefully. Up to the great grandfather’s return from a boat one evening, the community had been experiencing all kinds of strange occurrences.
