Police officers in Lagos state’s Badore district were forced to back down after a human rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, questioned a colleague who had stopped a car he was traveling in to search it.
According to Harrison, he was driving when a police officer pulled him over and asked what he did for a living.
Harrison responded that he had no right to ask him that question, but that he did have the authority to perform his stop and search. This enraged the police, who ordered him to exit the vehicle. When Harrison got down, the officer asked him again, and Harrison said he had no right to ask him what he does for a living.
It was at this point that a senior officer (pictured above) stepped in and intervened. He apologized to Harrison and allowed him to continue his journey.
The senior police officer said
We are on stop and search. We search vehicles and we search people in person. I am sorry for the way he put it for you. All he was supposed to have done was to say please come down, we want to search the vehicle and we want to search you.’
