Police officers from Kenya’s Ngungani police station have been accused of assaulting a 22-year-old guy from Mumoni, Kitui County, while he was in their custody.
Japheth Mutinda, who is presently being treated for injuries to his private parts as a result of the alleged attack, told a local TV station that his ordeal began when he requested a commercial biker to drive him home after a few beers at a bar nearby. He stated that the rider agreed to take him home for a cost of Ksh50.
He said, however, that the rider refused to fulfill their earlier agreement and wanted double payment halfway home. According to Japheth, a quarrel occurred, which resulted in the rider reportedly beating him.
He said;
I had told the Boda Boda rider to take me home after having a few drinks at a bar. The rider, however, stopped midway demanding a double payment of the initial agreement which I could not afford at the moment. I asked him to allow me to pay the amount he needed the following day but he refused.
Japheth went on to say that the rider went ahead and reported him to the area’s assistant chief, accusing him of beating him up. Following the complaint, the assistant chief, along by Ngugani police officers, proceeded to Japhet’s residence to arrest him.
He further added
During my arrest, the police asked me to give out a knife I used to threaten the Boda Boda rider. When I told them I don’t have a knife, they threatened me that if I couldn’t provide the alleged knife, they will take me to an unknown destination.
Japheth said that when he arrived at the Ngugani police station, policemen demanded him to strip naked and began hitting him while demanding that he produce the knife. He stated that the cops left him with injuries to his private parts and back during the attack.
Japheth is presently being treated at Mwingi Level IV Hospital while he requests that the Independent Police Oversight Authority examine the incident and take strict punishment against the police personnel who allegedly assaulted him.
